PROBLEM
You thought you nailed the shot. But when you look at it later, your subject is soft or blurry.
FIX
Use a faster shutter speed. Shutter speed is how long your camera "looks" at the scene. If your subject moves while the camera is looking, you get blur. For people walking, start at 1/500 second.
Quick check: If the whole photo is blurry, it's probably motion. If the background is sharp but your subject isn't, your camera focused on the wrong spot.
PRACTICE IT
Turn your mode dial to Shutter Priority (Tv on Canon, S on Nikon and Sony). Photograph someone walking at 1/30, 1/250, and 1/1000 second. Zoom in on each photo on the back of your camera. Which one froze the motion?
DOUG’S TIP
When checking for motion blur, look at what's moving fastest: hands and feet on people, wings on birds. That's where blur shows up first.
